There are inconsistent practices and often unreliable access to police misconduct data.
Flex Your Rights, a 501c3 educational nonprofit, has developed and launched a police transparency and open data initiative called OpenPolice (OP). We created it to track officer misconduct by expanding public access to police complaints and enabling non-governmental reviewers to process them with exceptional efficiency. For people who experience a negative police interaction, the OpenPolice.org website works like “TurboTax” for police complaints, giving users step-by-step guidance to prepare comprehensive incident reports. We’ve also developed administrative tools to help our complaint reviewers rapidly evaluate incoming submissions and manage user contacts, carefully guiding them to make safe and intelligent decisions. And to prompt engagement with law enforcement, we designed a unique business process for easy complaints filing with any of the 18,124 police agencies in the U.S.
